Postnatal & Breastfeeding Home Visits

What will we cover

Our programme starts with a visit from one of our midwives usually the day after the mother and baby are discharged from the hospital. The visits normally continue regularly for a period of around 4 weeks and are planned between you and your midwife. It enables families to properly adjust to their new situation, ensures that breastfeeding is well established and that parents' emotional well-being is secured.

Each visit is tailored according to the individual family's needs, with the emphasis being to focus on the most urgent issues present. In the early days this is quite often breastfeeding (or bottle-feeding); therefore, we will focus on the prevention of sore breasts and mastitis, show you different feeding positions, discuss how often and how long you need to feed your baby and how to know if your infant is getting enough milk.

As other issues then follow, you will be given the required support and advice to ensure that you are able to both fulfill and enjoy your role as a new parent. A visit typically includes:

Physical checks on the baby: jaundice, hydration, weight
Advice and guidance on aspects of baby care: feeding, cord care, bathing, swaddling/soothing techniques, winding, massage, and safe sleep
Physical checks on the mother: vaginal, perineal and c. section wound checks (including the removal of c. section stitches), checking of the uterus and bleeding, blood pressure monitoring
Advice, support and guidance on parenting techniques and routines, postnatal recovery and exercises, returning to work, ‘baby blues’, postnatal depression and anxiety

Additional information

This package includes 4 x 1-hour sessions. The packages are to be used within the first 6 months from the first visit. Visits are conducted on weekdays only; our midwives do not usually do home visits on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays but your care will be carefully planned with this in mind.
